Mouth and teeth in 3D

Explained for every age

For kids (7–11)

The mouth is the entrance door for food. There your teeth cut and grind, your tongue moves the bites around and saliva moistens them so you can swallow. You also use it to talk and to smile!

For teens (12–16)

Digestion begins in the mouth: the teeth break up food, saliva moistens it and the tongue pushes it back to be swallowed. We have four types of teeth: incisors for cutting, canines for tearing, and premolars and molars for grinding. Their roots are held in the maxilla (above) and the mandible (below) and are covered by the gum. In this model you see 28 permanent teeth; the four wisdom teeth are missing.

Pre-Med (17+)

The teeth are part of the digestive system: they mechanically break down food before swallowing. Humans are diphyodont: we develop two sets of teeth, the primary dentition (20 teeth, formula 2.1.0.2 per quadrant) and the permanent dentition (32 teeth, formula 2.1.2.3). Each tooth is anchored in the alveolar process of the maxilla or mandible and is surrounded by the gingiva. The oral cavity also contains the tongue, the soft palate with the uvula and the openings of the salivary glands. The model shows 28 permanent teeth, without the third molars.
