Explained for every age
For kids (7–11)
A group of small glands spread around the body that send chemical messages through the blood: hormones. They make you grow, give you energy, wake you up and help you calm down.
For teens (12–16)
Glands that release hormones into the blood to regulate growth, metabolism, sugar, sleep, stress and puberty. The pituitary gland, under the brain, directs almost all of them; the thyroid sets the pace of metabolism; the adrenal glands respond to stress; the pancreas controls glucose.
Pre-Med (17+)
Ductless glands that secrete hormones (peptide, steroid, amino acid-derived) into the bloodstream, acting on specific receptors. Hypothalamic-pituitary-target gland axis with negative feedback. Hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroids, thymus, adrenals, pancreatic islets and gonads; in addition, organs with secondary endocrine function (heart, kidney, adipose tissue, intestine).
