Medicines and traditional medicine in 3D

Explained for every age

For kids (7–11)

Medicines are substances that help your body heal or feel better. They're used safely when an adult who looks after you gives them to you, following what the doctor said. Also, many peoples have their own ways of caring for health, with plants and ancient knowledge.

For teens (12–16)

Medicines are used to treat diseases, relieve symptoms or prevent them. Every medicine has benefits and also risks, such as side effects or interactions with other remedies or foods; that's why they have to be used correctly and with special care in children. Before reaching the pharmacy they go through many tests. Alongside conventional medicine there is the traditional medicine of Indigenous peoples, such as Mapuche medicine, and complementary medicines, such as acupuncture. Comparing them with respect and with evidence helps make better health decisions.

Pre-Med (17+)

Pharmacology studies how drugs act (pharmacodynamics) and how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes and eliminates them (pharmacokinetics); both determine benefit, dosing and adverse effects. Every approved drug went through preclinical research, clinical trials and regulatory review, and remains under pharmacovigilance; in Chile, the Instituto de Salud Pública (ISP) controls and oversees medicines. The Chilean curriculum also asks students to compare conventional medicine with the traditional medicine of Indigenous peoples and with complementary medicines: systems with different foundations, forms of validation and legal frameworks, best analyzed with intercultural respect and evidence-based criteria.
